Raku Glazes for Western Raku Firing
Requirement: Biscuit Fired Pieces. Gas fueled raku kiln. Combuion container containing flammable material e.g. sawdust, paper, dry leaves. Water.
Before attempting this procedure we would recommend the use of eye protection, flame retardant aprons and gloves and respirators. Full training should also be sought.
Apply glaze by either dipping, spraying or painting ensuring the foot of the piece is clear of glaze. Place in the raku kiln and rapidly fire to approximately 1000 Deg C. This is normally done in around 2 - 3 hours. When the kiln reaches 1000 Deg C and is glowing red hot, remove pieces and place in combustion container. Cover container and allow to cool When cooled, remove from combustion container and scrub with water.
